December Newsletter

Eek, I'm slacking! Have a wonderful and safe holiday season everyone!

Murfreesboro Art League Newsletter – Dec. 2014
December classes: We will NOT have classes in December.

MAL Christmas party! It will be held on Mon, Dec, 8 from 7-9. We ask that you bring something good to eat (to SHARE, of course!) If you want to participate in the gift exchange, bring a wrapped gift that you made yourself. It can be food, a piece of art, or whatever, as long as it is made by you.

December Artists of the Month: This month, the featured artist at our gallery will be our own Clarice Nelson. Yes, I KNOW she was it last month, but we only have 1 day of the gallery being open in December, so there is no sense in getting someone new for that day.
Over at the Linebaugh Library, we are having a Christmas and winter theme. So far, we have works by Phyllis Razo, Claire Smith and Suzanne LeBeau. More might come tomorrow (see above under Dec. classes.)
===========================================================
Thank YOU, if you worked at the gallery at all this year. We had a lot more people helping out, and that has made it much easier on the board members. Also, thanks go to those who helped paint faces and welcome people to the Cannonsburgh Fall Festival.

Christmas at Cannonsburgh will be held on NEXT Sat, Dec, 6 from 10-3 pm. This is during the day time, so they have said that we can have the gallery open again this year. *Last year, we were closed due to the evening hours and the hayride running. (safety reasons)  We are BUYING goodies and do not have to mess with the hot chocolate this year! (yay!) So all you have to do is show up. They are having vendors again this year, so maybe we will sell some art for Christmas presents!

Since we won’t have a members’ meeting or board meeting until Jan, here are a few upcoming events to prepare for:
·            We’ll have a show at “Top of the Block” in Jan or Feb (I’ll have to check on the dates.)

·      We will have open studio time the first month, while we prepare classes for later in the year.
·      Several visiting artists will start having classes at the gallery on days OTHER than Mondays. Missy Veazie, Pam Hull, Gayle Leuce, Danny Jones and a plein aire group plan to meet here. I’ll send details when I get them.

The Frist Center for Visual Arts
has a show on Kandinsky right now through Jan 4. Let’s do a road trip. They also have free entry in exchange for canned goods on Mondays. Check out the link above.
Dates to remember:
·         Dec 6 – Christmas at Cannonsburgh 10-3
·         Dec 7-April – MAL Gallery is closed to the public for winter.
·         Dec 8 – MAL Christmas party 7-9 pm.

Elections were held for 2015.
President - Ted Stanley
Vice President – Peggy Miles
Treasurer – Phyllis Razo
Recording Secretary - Nanette Mathe
Corresponding Secretary – Suzanne LeBeau

Board members will be appointed in January. It was mentioned that we need to add a Sunshine Committee.

November newsletter

Murfreesboro Art League Newsletter – Nov. 2014
November classes: November 3, 10, and 17 – Watercolor with Phyllis Razo!” Come see what tricks Phyllis has up her sleeve! Supplies needed are watercolor paints, brushes and a palette. You will also need your own paper towels. On day 1, you will need 2 sheets of watercolor paper about 8x10 or 9x12.*individual sheets will be available for purchase if you don’t want to buy a full sheet or pad from the store. On day 2, you can bring some small watercolor sheets or cardstock to make cards. Day 3 will be working on the piece that we will start on day 1.

November Artists of the Month: This month, the featured artist at our gallery will be our own Clarice Nelson. As founder of this league, it is her moment to shine!
Over at the Linebaugh Library, we will showcase the works of our newer members. Sometimes, it is hard to fill an entire display case when you are just starting out. Right now, Linda Rex and Sandee Fritcher have expressed an interest, but we would like at LEAST 3-4 (up to 7) more artists. Each should provide 2 or 3 pieces of medium size, preferably framed or painted around the edges. If we DO get 9 new members showing, then it will be only one piece each.
===========================================================

Special thanks go to Claire and Peggy for helping with the student tours this month. The kids love it! (Wait, it seems like I said the same thing LAST month. Thanks again, ladies!)

Also, thanks a bundle to those who helped with the Harvest Days. It is always exciting when we get a crowd.

Fall Festival at Cannonsburgh: This Friday will be the Fall Festival at Cannonsburgh. We have been asked to give out candy and do face painting. It is from 2-5 throughout the village. WE NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS for this!

Wilson Bank Oktoberfest – We had a beautiful weekend for the event. Phyllis Razo won a first prize for watercolor portrait AND one for watercolor landscape. Suzanne LeBeau won second place in acrylic landscape and third place in mixed media. Katie Plummer won second prize in mixed media.

The Todd Art Gallery at M T S U is hosting a new show which will run through November 14   It is an exhibit of work from the officers of the Mid-South Sculpture Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the creation and understanding of sculpture. Sculpture educates; effects social change; and engages artists; art professionals and community in dialogue.
The Frist Center for Visual Arts –
has a show on Kandinsky right now through Jan 4. Let’s do a road trip.
Our new sign is HERE! Thanks Ted! It looks great! Come check it out on the front of the building.
Christmas: Our Linebaugh theme will be Christmas, so get your Christmas painting started so it will be ready in a month.
Dates to remember:
·         Nov. 3, 10 & 17 Watercolor classes with Phyllis Razo. See body of newsletter for supplies
·         Nov 22 and 23 – Studio Tour – Phyllis Razo and Carol Berning both have exhibits during this weekend.

One of our favorite instructors, Marilyn Brisbois is back with her interesting techniques on YUPO “paper.” Supplies needed are watercolor paints, brushes and a largish palette. October Artists of the Month: This month, the Linebaugh artist of the month is Carol Berning. She does mostly oil paintings of people and landscapes. The featured artist at our gallery will be Linda Rex. Come see her colored pencil works on the display wall! This will be a great way to showcase the gallery in local media. Thank you to everyone who brought in their new paintings for Fall. If your pieces have been up for the whole year so far, they will be waiting for you in the back.

September newsletter

Murfreesboro Art League Newsletter – Sept. 2014

September classes: Most of September will be “open studio” nights. Bring your own project and work on it. If you are still working on the things from the abstract class, this is a good time to FINISH it. Don’t leave it lying around half done for a year! (not that I have EVER done that – lol!!)
We will have one drawing class on Sept. 22. Does anyone have any requests? If not, we will discuss types of shading to make things look more 3 dimensional.

September Artists of the Month: This month, we are starting something new! In addition to our artist of the month who shows over at the Linebaugh Library, we will also have a special wall to highlight one of our own. This month, the Linebaugh artist of the month is Marilyn Brisbois. The featured artist at our gallery will be Bobbie Bittner. This will be a great way to showcase the gallery in local media. Speaking of this, do we have someone who is good at writing articles? We’d love to have a PR person!!

Now that the Autumn season is upon us, it is time to switch over our paintings at the gallery. Each person is encouraged to bring between 1 and 5 or 6 pieces, preferably Fall or Winter themed, still lifes or abstracts. (This is not set in stone, just some ideas!) Please bring your paintings on one of the first 2 Monday nights during our open studio time.(Sept 1 or 8)

Showing your art – Here’s an extra opportunity to show your art! The Mayday Brewery (just up the street) will be having art shows now. The next one is Vintage Circus - Oct 2 - Nov 6– Submissions due Sept 25!
If you are interested in submitting for any of these shows - please contact Dawna at dkmagarts@gmail.com for more info. Submissions should be sent at least one week prior to when the show is to be hung.

We will not be doing the Center for the Arts this fall. They are going with a new format and want it to be more individual shows. I’m sure if you have plenty of art, you are welcome to contact them to exhibit there yourself!

Dates to remember:
·         Sept 1, 8, 15,  – Open Studio time

June newsletter

Murfreesboro Art League Newsletter – June 2014
The ROTUNDA show is in full swing. The reception has been moved to Thursday, June 12 from 4:30 to 6 pm. All participating artists are asked to attend the reception if possible and bring snacks/finger foods. Drinks and plates/napkins are provided. Rotunda take-down will occur on Friday, June 20 from 2-4 pm.

June classes – We will not have an actual teacher for JUNE. Instead, we will have open studio time, where you can work on your own projects from 7-9 pm on each Monday night and socialize with other artists.
July Classes – We will have “free paint” or open studio time on July 7, since so many will be gone for the 4th of July weekend. On July 14 and 20, Joabe will be teaching oil pastels. A supply list will be emailed at a later date.
Linebaugh Library Artist of the Month:
June’s Artist of the Month will be our founder, Clarice Nelson.

In other news:
We need people to sign up for the weekend slots. Remember that everyone has a busy weekend schedule, including the board members, who also put in hours in meetings and planning in addition to the weekends. It is easy and fun. You get to meet people from all around the world who are visiting Murfreesboro and work on your art, read or chat! Each member of the art league is required to work at least one 3 hour shift per month. This way, we can keep our membership dues LOW, since we do not have to hire a curator. (I estimated hours if we had to hire one. It would cost us each about $100 more per year if we have to go this route!)
Uncle Dave Macon Days – July 11-13
We already have a list of who has said they can help. Please add these dates to the calendar. Remember, July is a busy month, so we will be asking people to work one other date in July BESIDES the Dave Macon weekend.
Sam Davis Home Juried Art Show
The Sam Davis Art show was a lot of fun. The following members had art that was juried into the show: Phyllis Razo, Suzanne LeBeau, Carol Berning, and Heloise Shilstat. Funds raised went to help support the Sam Davis Home and Museum. Phyllis sold a piece!

Dates to remember:
·      June 2, 9, 16, and 23 – Open studio time for members 7-9 Monday evenings. No teacher this month.
·      June 12 – Rotunda reception, 4:30-6 pm at City Hall Rotunda
·      June 20 – Rotunda take-down from 2-4 pm
·      June 23 – member business meeting –location TBD!
