See ya next year and cool article!

Our Murfreesboro Art League is closed for the rest of the year. The public GALLERY portion will be closed until our spring opening in April, with the exception of the February Boro Art Crawl on Feb 12. However, we will still have open studio or adult art classes on Monday nights, starting with January open studio nights from 7-9 on Jan 4, 11, and 18. Bring something to work on, or set up a still life with our spotlights and random items/flowers! Chat with other artists or have your work critiqued if you want.

While you are wondering what to do with all your spare time here at the end of Dec.(ha ha!), why not read this article about one of our members, Gayle Levee? Then, when you are done, get out there and paint, paint, paint!

Boro Art Crawl for December

The Murfreesboro Art League will be part of the December Boro Art Crawl. We will have wine tasting, along with the smooth sax sounds of Ernest B. Newsom. Here's a sneak peek! Remember, come to the back of Cannonsburgh Village! This is the last date the gallery will be open for 2015! We will re-open in April. We will still be open for the other art crawls and classes, though.

November and December newsletter

Murfreesboro Art League Newsletter Nov/Dec 2015
Upcoming Monday classes:
For the month of  November, Katie Plummer will be helping us learn about pastel drawing. On Nov 2, we will use regular pastel paper (or watercolor paper if you don’t have the pastel kind) and prepare a canvas to be used the following week (Nov 9). Then, on Nov 16, we will have a special demonstration by John Martin from the Gem School for Middle TN Gem and Mineral Society and do a jewelry project. *See supply list in side-bar.

Overall Creek Elementary School is asking us to help with their parents’ night and barbecue. We will take some of our art and the racks, as well as do some activities with the kiddos that attend. We’ll need volunteers and folks to bring/show their art.

Artists of the month
Over at Linebaugh Library, we will feature the art of Diane Marsella. Here at the gallery, the featured artist will be Mark Jackson.

Sad News: Our condolences go out to Linda and Eva Rex. Mom/Grandma, Beverly, passed away about a week ago. A book donation will be made to our art library in her memory.

Professional teachers:
Carol Curtis has Wednesday watercolor classes. Come see a different style of doing watercolors vertically! More info and samples here: http://carolcurtisart.com/
Gayle Levee has special Sat demos this month on Nov 14 at Plaza in Nashville (inexpensive /free supplies 615-254-3368)and Nov 21 at Richland Fine Art, 4009 Hillsoboro Pike – FREE – see how she plans and starts a painting. Visit http://gaylelevee.com/for more info.

THANK YOU!Thank yous go out to those who helped with Halloween Face painting, Harvest Days, working the gallery, and Oktoberfest. Several artists won awards there, too. (Phyllis, Katie, Beverly, Peggy, & Suz)

Some grouchy business:
Here’s a little reminder that the paper towels in the bathroom and kitchen are to REMAIN in the bathroom and kitchen. The art league will provide these for your sanitation. However YOU are supposed to provide your OWN paper towels to use with any art activities you do.
Also, please remember to clean your area. If you are going to be doing oil or acrylic, please cover your area with newspapers and/or table cloths. We are trying to make the tables last as long as possible. We have baby wipes to help get the paint off the tables.
COFFEE users/makers: The pot was found left ON with burnt coffee in the bottom. On another occasion, it was left full, with grounds still in there. If you turn it ON, please turn it OFF and clean up after yourself.
Supplies for Nov:
pastels, pastel paper(or watercolor paper), paper towels, small canvas or canvas board (no bigger than 12x12) *Let it snow!*
If you have winter or Christmas themed paintings, please consider bringing them in to the gallery in the next couple of weeks to switch out. We want to have it ready for the December Boro Art Crawl, but would like to show it for a few weeks BEFORE that, too.
Speaking of Boro Art Crawl, the deadline for entering your work is Nov 21. This is a good opportunity to spread the word about the art league. Go to http://boroartcrawl.com/

Murfreesboro Art League Newsletter October
This Friday: Boro Art Crawl!

It’s hard to believe that Murfreesboro FINALLY has an art crawl. We are showing middle TN that we have a thriving arts community here in the ‘Boro! The Boro Art Crawl is Friday, Oct. 9 from 6-9 pm.
Upcoming Monday classes:
For the month of October, we won’t have any “official” teachers. By request, we are having a month of “open studio.” During this time, we ask that you bring something to work on for yourself. We’ll chat and help with each other’s work if someone asks for help. Enjoy!

Boro Art Crawl call for artists

We are asking local artists from the middle TN area to submit art for the Boro Art Crawl. What's an art crawl, you ask?? It's where folks go from business to business viewing art that is being shown there. Currently, we have about 21 venues, in addition to several art galleries, that will be showing art, including the Murfreesboro Art League. If you are an artist, have at least 5 pieces of art, and wish to get your name out there for FREE, please check out the link for more info. http://boroartcrawl.com/

September newsletter

Murfreesboro Art League Newsletter
September 2015 S
Upcoming classes:
We are so excited to have fabulous art teachers two months in a row. We learned a LOT in Carol Berning’s oil portraits class last month. Now, it’s time to work with Mark Jackson in acrylics.  I will have to attach his list of supplies separately, so look for it in the email. Please note that he says to bring OLD brushes. This is because acrylics that dry on the brush are a BEAR to get out. If you are a good little boy or girl and take care of your brushes, it will not be a problem.
Artists of the month
The Linebaugh Library’s artist of the month is Carol Curtis. Peggy Miles will be our gallery’s artist of the month. Come see what these two artists have in store for us!
GREENWAY ART FESTIVAL:
We are going to have 3 (yes, count them – THREE) tents at this year’s Greenway Art Festival. http://wgnsradio.com/2015-greenway-art-festival-attracts-more-artist-than-ever-sept-19-cms-28273 In addition, member, Heloise Shilstat will have a booth showcasing her torn-paper art. If you are interested in showing your art/HELPING at the booth, please email me at suzanne.lebeau@att.net. Here’s who I have helping/showing now: Jack Freeman, Norma Holder, Ted Stanley, Bobbie Bittner, Phyllis Razo, Harry Polny, Peggy Miles, and Suzanne LeBeau. If you are helping in the gallery that day, you may send some of your pieces for us to show because you are already providing an important service! Gayle’s Saturday morning oil class will be out there doing plein air paintings, and (hopefully) drawing attention to our booth!
Thank you! A big thank you goes out to those who helped at the gallery during the busy summer months, the “Back to School Blast” and the “Wild Arts Day.” These things all help give a positive view of our gallery to the public.
Gayle Levee is accepting reservations for her fall and winter classes. One of the methods she will cover is “pre-mixing paints so you don’t lose the spontaneity of plein air works. The 4 week class starts on Sept. 9 on Sat. mornings. Contact Gail at leveefineart@gmail.com for more info.

Rotunda show:
Thank you to all that helped with the Rotunda show. It was one of our best shows yet. We had nearly double the attendance, and the pictures were fabulous.
Greek Festival
If you want some good photo-ops and great food, visit the Greek Festival in Nashville the weekend after Labor Day. Ask Ted! He’ll even say something in Greek for you!

Upcoming elections: We will soon be having elections. Our organization has gotten itself into a bit of a bind by having the same people just rotating jobs. We need some new folks who are willing to run for office. I know, I KNOW you are going to tell us you are too busy right now. If that’s the case, consider a job with fewer duties. Here’s a BRIEF breakdown of the jobs. For more info, contact the person currently serving in that position. We will have nominations open for the next 2 months. Elections will occur in November and jobs will start in January.

President: Runs the meetings – keeps up with agenda items, keeps us on track J, and acts as spokesperson with outside groups
Vice President – organizes our classes (about 6 teachers per year) Group will help with this if need be! Runs the meetings when President is absent.
Treasurer – Takes care of money, bills, and checks, etc.
Recording Secretary – Takes minutes at meetings and types them up to send to board. Reads minutes at following meeting.
Corresponding Secretary – Takes the minutes and turns them into a newsletter format. Posts newsletter on Facebook and blog.
We also have board members who are in charge of things like scrapbooks, hanging the gallery, and more!
Please consider running – remembering that we are ALL busy people, but we NEED to work together to keep this gallery running smoothly.

 Dates to remember:
·         Sept 7, 14 and 21 – Mark Jackson teaches acrylics
·         Sept 11-13 = Greek Festival
·         Sept 19 – Greenway Festival
·         Sept 28 – Monthly members’ meeting
Our gallery is in the process of setting up for the fall show. Here are a few previews. However, this might change, since some folks have not switched out their pics yet.

Uncle Dave Macon Days – NEXT week!
They are doing sign-in differently this year, so you do not need a ticket. Just tell them at the main gate that you are working for the Murfreesboro Art League, and they should have you on a list to cross off. I do NOT have the list here with me, so I’ll have to email that out on Wed. It would be great if you would paint or draw while working, but HONESTLY, so many people talk to you that it is hard to come up with a masterpiece unless you are used to the interruptions.
Murfreesboro Art Crawl
They are trying to get this going this year. A meeting will be held in the Center for the Arts on Wed, July 8.
