October Pastel Class Materials and Info

Materials needed for the pastel classes by Reba Hinkle on the first three Monday nights of October at Murfreesboro Art League


     For the first class, we will be painting a still life on 9 x 12 sanded paper, 145 lb., 400 and 600 grit, which you can purchase from the presenter the night of the class for $2.65 for UART premium sanded pastel paper or $3.35 for Pastel Premier 9 x 12 sanded paper, 400 grit.  The grit size 400 is fine and 600 is a little thicker grit.  If you wish, you may bring your own paper or a sanded board.  If you do not want to use a sheet of sanded paper, we will have 11 x 14 inch pastel paper available at no cost.   
     For the second and third classes, we will be painting a red rose from a picture on Strathmore Pastel paper, 80 lb. 400 Series.  I used a light blue pastel paper but you can use whatever color you like.  Pastel paper will be provided free or bring your own.
     The pastels I will be using are Mungyo Soft Pastels (90 set).  They are a good pastel (bright colors and little chalk).  The cheaper you go, or if you use student quality like Faber-Castell, there will be more chalk and less color.  Brighter colors make better paintings.  But if you are not sure you want to invest money in them right now, try to buy the highest quality pastels you can afford (I try to get them on sale!).  You can use full sticks or half sticks and they are available for purchase individually at art supply stores.  Half sticks are better for covering large areas.  Look at the reds, yellows, and blues!!!  You especially need good red colors and a lot of pastels available do not have a good reds.
     The colors I will be using for a still life painting will be:  Chrome Green Light (dark green); Chrome Green Deep (A lighter dark green); Olive Green IV (lime green or light green); Bluish Green I (blue/green); Indian Red (Dark Reddish purple); Madder Red Deep (Deep Red); Burnt Umber; Burnt sienna; Light oxide Red (medium light range); Light Oxide Red (light red) and Very Light yellow (almost white). 
     The colors I will be using for the rose pastel painting are:  Madder Lake Deep (Dark Red); Carmine (Med. Red); Rose Pink (Light rose/red); Orange; Chrome Green Deep (Dark green); Phthalo Green (Medium green); Chrome Green Light (Light green); Burnt Sienna (medium brown); Mars Violet (Dark Brownish); White; and a “Schmincke” brand Neutral Gray or any medium gray (used to section paper into halves and thirds).
     You will also need the following:  A slender, long handled brush for measuring; a kneaded rubber eraser; paper towels or cloths; and a board or piece of cardboard for support with paper tape and clips as needed to attach the paper to the board or cardboard or a sanded prepared board.  If you have a table-top easel, bring that if you want to sit.  Stand-up easels are available at our gallery.  Pastel paintings need to be done standing straight on an easel. Optional items are paper stumps and rubber gloves (we may have some rubber gloves at the gallery).  For the second class, you will need a medium size round brush (1/2“to or a 1”) as we will do a background wash in two medium pastel tones using alcohol to wash.

> Acrylic Classes with Mark Jackson were held on Monday, Sept. 18th and Sunday, Sept. 24th.  (The Sept. 11th class was canceled due to bad weather.)  The classes were well attended.  Thanks Mark.
> October classes will be pastel art with Reba Hinkle on the 2nd, 9th, and 16th at 7:00 pm promptly.  Supplies were posted- http://murfreesboroartleague.blogspot.com.  Non-members - 1st class is free and $15.00 afterward!  Come join us!  
>October 30th is an “Eatin & Greetin” meeting so bring food/snack and come join us.  Visitors are Welcome!!!
>The Greenway Festival at the Greenway Trail at Old Fort Park on Saturday Sept. 16th was great fun and some members sold their art. 
>The “Autumn in the Oaks” at Oakland Mansion on Sept. 21st had members of the Murfreesboro Art League and others demonstrating their en plein air skills!  The children were very interested in the paintings and it was a fun event. 
>The Gallery will not participate in the Boro Art Crawl on Friday, October 13th -See http://boroartcrawl.com . Some of our members will be showing on the square, so go on down and have fun!
>Suzanne, Mark and Phyllis will be showing art at the Art Show Perception on Sept. 29th and 30th from 6-9 pm Friday, and 10 am to 4 pm, Saturday at 101 Front St., Smyrna TN.
>October 28th from 10 am to 4 pm is Harvest days at Canonsburg.  Some members will be demonstrating their art.  It should be a fun day!
>Mondays, November 6th, 13th, and 20th at 7 pm will be demonstrations on how to create art work from photographs on aluminum by Diane Marsella.  If you have a laptop, please bring? 
>Check out the Art Studio Tour at www.artstudiotour.org  by the Stones River Craft Association on November 18th and 19th.
>Phyllis attended the Murfreesboro Cultural Heritage meeting as our representative.  Attendees are asked to complete a survey (plan) about historical things in Rutherford County and how to promote them to visitors.   Phyllis also discussed with Shelia of Canonsburg our idea of a possible Western Theme with chuck wagons and plein air painters from other locations sometime next fall. Shelia was reported as being very excited and wanted to attend, with our members, the Booth Western Art Museum in Huntersville, Ga. to get information about their Chuck Wagon event. 
>Linebaugh Library Artist for the month of October is Michael Mathis, November is Katia Plummer, and December is Joe Cole.   Only Murfreesboro Art League and the name of the artist allowed in window.
>Featured Artist at Gallery for
October/November will be Norma Holden.
Dates to remember:
·          October at Gallery –Pastel art on October 2nd, 9th and 16th.  Business meeting on Oct. 23rd and Eatin’ & Greetin’ on Oct. 30th.
·          November at Gallery- Photo Shop photography on aluminum on November 6th, 13th and 20th.  Business meeting is the 29th.

Something to put your paints on. I prefer a porcelian tray.
I personally use one that is 20” x 12” x 2” deep. The deeper the better, you will see why at the class.

And a jump drive for your computer! It’s a surprise!

Mark Jackson's acrylic classes Monday 11th and 18th

Come join Mark for instruction in acrylic painting of clouds.  See materials listing in a previous post.
Non-Members may participate free for the fist class they attend but pay $15.00 per class thereafter.  The theme will be clouds.

Greenway Art Festival on Saturday, Sept. 16th

The Murfreesboro Art League has two booths for the Greenway Art Festival on Saturday, Sept. 16th.  Those members participating are bringing their art to show.  The gates open to the public at 10:00 am and close at 4:00 pm. The location is:  910 Golf Lane, Murfreesboro, TN, off Old Fort Parkway.  Hope to see everyone there and tell your friends and family!

> Classes on August 7, 14, and 21 are as follows:  The 7th is colored pencil with Suzanne LeBeau and Kylee Harrison; the 14th is Beverly Hall with watercolor on “Yupo” paper; and the 21st is Phyllis Razo with water soluble colored pencils.  For August 7thwe have colored pencils available at the Gallery but Suzanne recommends bringing colored pencils like “Primacolor” and “Derwent”, two sheets of watercolor or pastel paper (or any sturdy paper like Bristol) that can be taped to an 8 x 10 size. For August 14th   bring watercolors.  Beverly will provide the Yupo paper at a cost per person from $1.00 to $1.50, depending on her cost.  For August 21st, bring watercolor paper and water-soluble colored pencils. 
-Bring paper towels and a hand sharpener (if you have one) for all.
Non-members - 1st class is free and $15.00 afterward!  Come join us!

>July 7 & 8, 2017 were the Uncle Dave Macon Days – Members who worked those days had fun and met lots of people.  Check out the Murfreesboro Art League’s Facebook Page – Pictures were posted of the event.

>Murfreesboro Art League Summer Art Camp 2017 is winding down with the advanced class this week.  It looks like the children were learning perspective!  Something we all struggle with at times.  Thanks Suzanne!

> Murfreesboro Art League members will dress in costume and demonstrate their art for 15 to 25 writers from tourist magazines on Friday, August 25th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at Cannonsburg Village.  On Tuesday, August 29th, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, members from the art league will demonstrate their art for a tour of seniors from Dixon.  Both of these events sound like fun – Come and Join Us!

>September 21st is “Autumn in the Oaks” at Oakland Mansion.  Artists will be demonstrating their en plein air skills!  Come and watch our members painting.
>Linebaugh Library will be exhibiting artists work as follows:   August is Suzanne, September is Phyllis, October is Michael, November is Katia, and December is Joe. Go by and look at the display and check out the library.

>The Great American Race day was on June 26th- at Cannonsburg Historic Village.  Lots of antique cars and people!  The food trucks were great and we had four to six members painting at the Murfreesboro Art League’s Gallery!!!

>The Murfreesboro Art League building committee will meet at Barnes and Noble at the Avenue on Tuesday, July 11th at 6:30 pm. 

>Linebaugh Library Artists for the month of July is Reba, August is Suzanne, September is Phyllis, and October is Michael.

>Featured Artist at Gallery for June/July will be Phyllis Razo.

Dates to remember:
·          July at Gallery:  July 3rd, 10th, 17th Monday nights is Open Studio.  July 24th is our monthly business meeting and July 31st is our “Eatin & Greetin” night. 
·          July 7th & 8thUncle Dave Macon Days and the Gallery will be open.
·          July 2017 Summer Art Camp:  Beginners –July 10-14 and 17-21, and Advanced – July 24-28 from 9:00 am to Noon.
·          August At Gallery – Classes in colored pencil and watercolor classes on Monday nights, August 7th, 14th and 21st, and monthly business meeting, August 28th.
·          September Classes – Pastel art – September 4th, 11th, and 18th – more info later as to supply cost. Monthly business meeting – Sept. 25th.
Future planned events:
>An annual event is being planned for this year and will be discussed at the July 24th Business Meeting.

>Plein air event being planned for next year sometime in October 2018– paint out and maybe chuck wagons??  Phyllis Razo is in charge of this event planning.
