Top ‘o the mornin’ to ya (or afternoon, or evening!) It’s hard to believe it’s already March and 2012 dues are DUE! In fact, for returning members, if you want to exhibit with us at the Rotunda, dues must be paid by March 19 (in about 2 weeks!!)

Speaking of the Rotunda – It will run from March 27 – May 4, which is over a month this year. You may enter up to 3 pieces, and the information for each needs to be to Phyllis (prazo0503@aol.com) by Fri, Mar 23 so we can make matching pre-printed tags. No changes may be made after this date. The following should be included: Name of piece, artist, medium and price. The price cannot be included on the tags, but it will be included in the list behind the desk in case someone is interested in a purchase. The reception will be from 3-5 on April 5. We need to bring finger foods and mingle with the guests. Rev. Newsom has agreed to play.

You need to RSVP if you are taking the encaustics class in March BEFORE SUNDAY if possible. We need to order supplies!

April will now be pastels by Katie Plummer. She only allows 10 per class so she can do more in depth teaching. It will be first come/first served so sign up quickly. Each person might just get to attend ONE class in April. If less than 30 sign up, we’ll rotate people through again.

We will NOT have an artist of the month at the Linebaugh library for the months of March or June due to other commitments by the library.

Our wine and cheese tasting event is rapidly approaching. Our wine guy that we had did not work out. Does anyone have a connection to get wine donated, or cheap in return for publicity?

Smyrna is getting artistic!! They now have an arts commission. Contact Phyllis if you are interested in helping with this. Also, we have a full time gallery now. It is called EarthSoul Gallery and has mostly abstract works. It is at 307 Hazelwood Dr. Our own Claire Smith will be a featured artist there in April, and she will share the honors with an artist who features back yards. The title of the exhibit will be “Outer Space.”

We just set up for the MidSouth bank display last Monday. We filled 5 of our traveling screens this time. It will run through March 19. Thanks to all who helped set up!

Heloise Shilstat was one of the featured artists at the Symphony today. Congrats! Also, Susan Chaffin will have a traveling photography show. Way to go!

REMINDER: If you have business to discuss during one of our classes, please take it outside. The instructors deserve our respect and attention during their valuable time. Many of them are giving us a huge discount over their normal rates, and we are truly grateful!

There is a new group for artists in Murfreesboro (A.I.M), which plans to have a juried show and work with area youth. They will meet on this Fri at 5:30 at the Attic School of Art.

Murfreesboro Art League Newsletter February

Well, it’s a fresh start to a brand new year! I hope everyone is rarin’ to go to our upcoming classes. There have been a few changes to the Feb. lineup! Phyllis Razo will be teaching watercolor for the first Monday. Please bring watercolor paints and brushes , paper, tape (if you need it), and your own paper towels. The second Monday will be a presentation by world-wide photographer Christian Sperka. The third Monday will be palette knife painting with Clarice Nelson. You can use oils or acrylics. Please bring various palette knives if you have them, small canvas or board, paints, and cleaning supplies.

Remember that dues are DUE! If you want to show with the art league this year, they must be paid before the end of March! *New members MAY still show after they have paid at any time in the year. Amounts are: Regular: $45, Family: $50, Senior: $35, and Student: $25. Think about this: Since we are one of the FEW art leagues that don’t charge for most of our classes (only special situations with unusual supplies), you are getting a SUPER bargain! It works out to less than $1 per hour of classes. That’s unbelievable in my experience. To help keep the gallery running, we ask that if you want to hang items in our gallery, you volunteer to work 1 shift per month from April to October. Also: Returning members, please double check your info. You don’t have to do a new form, just update anything that has changed since last year.

Our Linebaugh Library artist of the month for January was a showcase of the different classes offered at the Murfreesboro Art League. For February, we will feature the works of Phyllis Razo, who works primarily in watercolors. Stop by the library to check it out.

A special thank you goes out to all those who helped with Christmas at Cannonsburgh. We had about 400 people come through the gallery and were wiped out of every goody we brought. Also, thanks to those ladies who helped at the Symphony face-painting booth in January. Events like this help advertise our art league as well as foster great community relations.

The Mid-South Bank show will be from Feb. 27 (set-up 2-4 ) until March 19 (take down 2-4 ). Please only bring art that is no bigger than 16x20. Also, don’t forget to be getting your paintings ready for the Rotunda Show in March and the Iris show later this spring.

We are still working on grants to help put some murals in local schools as well as buy some equipment for the gallery, such as a projector and screen.

Smyrna has an art gallery! It is called EarthSoul Gallery and consists of mostly abstract works. It is at 307 Hazelwood Dr.

We need someone to volunteer for the position of helping hang artwork in the gallery (and for shows if you are available.) Claire is stepping down, and we need someone to fill the position.

This Monday will be the last of the scratchboard classes!

Next Saturday, we'll need help with the symphony. They would like us to paint faces at their family event from 10-11 am. Please bring brushes, palette, and paper towels. They'll provide paints. It's also a good idea to have a few simple designs hashed out (maybe something musical.) Please RSVP to a board member!

and sign up. This guy is amazing. He really does it for free, and just has a few "commercials" for paints he sponsors. You can also buy PAST classes, which is how he makes money from this. Again, it is FREE.

Next Monday, Jan. 30 will be our regular meeting and an "Eatin' Meetin', so bring a goody and some work to share. We will also have a great guest lecturer. Christian Sperka, who is the photographer for the Nashville Zoo and international photographer, will give a talk on his adventures.

February's classes will NOT be palette knife paintings due to a family commitment. Classes tbd.

Wow, the holidays really got the best of me. I completely forgot to post the December newsletter and update the upcoming events section. At least it is STILL December!

Murfreesboro Art League Newsletter December

Woo hoo – We have new officers for the 2012 year! They are as follows:

Monday night, Dec. 5: We will be decorating for the Christmas at Cannonsburgh event this weekend. Bring winter or Christmas themed paintings if you have them.

Christmas at Cannonsburgh will be this Friday and Saturday from 6-9. We need people to make/bring goodies. We also need workers to help serve hot cider and chocolate.

Nanette has been working hard on submitting grants for projects and equipment for next year. She has sent a proposal to Nissan for our murals in the schools project and one for a projector to the electric company. She is also working with a company called USA funding, which submits our grants to several different companies. She also diverted a SCAM artist!

Our own Larry Pinkerton is on display at Blue Restaurant. We plan a “field trip” day to go eat lunch and view his works! Come meet us at BLUE on Tues, Dec. 20 at 11:30 to support a fellow artist and enjoy a great meal. (Yes, that’s the REAL link to the restaurant that I added!) It bugs me when my mail is full of fake links…grrr!)

The Blacksmiths gave us a donation for the use of the room for their broom making class. Those guys ROCK!

Jim Fraley said the Methodist Church art sale was lots of fun. Let’s do it as a group next year.

Linebaugh artist for the month of January will be Sabrina Fraley. Phyllis Razo will do Feb, and Suzanne LeBeau will do March. If you would be interested in doing this, contact Claire.

Arlene Schumacker will be doing her daytime watercolor classes beginning Tues, Jan. 3 from 10-12:30. There are 3 spaces left. Let a board member know if you are interested.

Nichole Dawson will be teaching scratch board /clayboard in January. Feb. will be palette knife painting with Clarice Nelson, and March will be encaustics with Beth Moore.

Supplies for scratchboard class: Some are available at the MTSU bookstore (listed as “B” below) and Jerry’s Artarama.

· Clayboard/scratchboard, black or white (B about $7.00)

· Image of each artist’s choice.

· Transfer paper that will show up on your scratchboard (if you wish) with hard pencil or ball point to transfer image or soft pastel pencil if you prefer free hand drawing.

· India ink pen to correct mistakes. Speedball pen holder $1.65 (B)

·Etching tools: you can use xacto knifes, pins, scraper tools, etching tools, engraving tools, stylus. Different tools to “scratch” the surface.

Also recommended: 112 and 113 flat cutters $1.55 each (B) and Prisma color brush top marker(India ink pen) $2.49 (B)

Note: If you want, acrylics, oils, colored pencils can be used to color the etching, or the black and white image can be photocopied and you can make hand colored limited edition prints.

Reminders and Happy Thanksgiving/Black Friday

Next Monday, November 28th, will be our business meeting. We will be electing officers for the coming year, discussing upcoming events, and Suzanne will share some tips learned from the "Artlightenment" event a couple of weeks ago. The workshops she attended included "Publicizing your art dream," Promoting and branding YOU and your art," and "Creating a Successful Art Career: Finding your own market." We will also have a "free paint" day after the meeting, because it's been a while and we miss it.

Other dates of interest are:
Dec. 5 - Decorate for Christmas at Cannonsburgh (We will also free paint after this until 9 pm.)
Dec.9 & 10 - We will need to help serve cider and hot chocolate during the Christmas at Cannonsburgh event from6-9 pm each night.
Dec. 12 - Our Christmas PARTY! Bring something to munch on and a small, wrapped piece of your own artwork to swap in our gift exchange.

Hi everyone, I apologize for this post in advance. I've tried 3 times and it still has a bunch of random numbers (possibly our blog address) over the top of the words. I think you can still read enough to get the idea.

Murfreesboro Art League Newsletter November

Please note that our Eatin’ Meetin’ will be cancelled in October because it falls directly on Halloween night.

November’s teacher will be Marilyn Brisbois, who will show us how to do watercolors on YUPO paper. I’ve repeated the class list, since we won’t have classes in December. She will have some YUPO to buy if you don’t have your own. I’ve checked, and Jerry’s does not currently have any. Please let us know if you will be attending and need the paper so she can get a rough estimate of how much to buy. Full sheet (22x26) is $3.50, 9x12 is $1.50, 11x14 is $2.00.

The MidSouth fall exhibit will be happening from Nov. 7-21. We are asked to bring our paintings (16x20 or smaller, please) to the bank (just off the square) on Mon. afternoon between 2:30 and 4. Please help – We need enough art to fill 4 of our panels.

The gallery is now officially closed until the spring re-opening. However, we WILL be open for Christmas at Cannonsburgh on Dec 9 and 10 from 6-9 pm. We will serve hot chocolate, cider and small treats in the gallery.

The new Linebaugh Artist of the Month is Aubrie Gerardi. Congratulations Aubrie! If anyone is interested in becoming an Artist of the Month for the 2012 year, please contact Claire.

Our wine and cheese event has a NAME! It will be called “A Taste of Art” and will be held on May 12 from 7-9 pm in conjunction with the Arts Month of the Murfreesboro Bicentennial Celebration. If you know caterers or people in the wine business, please ask them for donations in exchange for advertising. See Phyllis (committee chair) for more info.

Congratulations to Mark, who sold a print at the symphony.

Much of our October business meeting was spent working out ideas for grants for possible children’s programs at the gallery and murals in area schools. This should be very exciting as we get more details!

We will vote on officers at the next business meeting on November 28. So far, we have running for office: Nanette Mathe for president, Debbie Haggard for vice president, Phyllis Razo for secretary, Katheryn Carroll for recording secretary, and Suzanne LeBeau for corresponding secretary (which will include newsletters and online correspondence now)

Some of you might have noticed that we did not have a September newsletter. We are moving from having it published at the end of the month to the beginning, so are skipping Sept.

Murfreesboro Art League Newsletter October

Please note that our Eatin’ Meetin’ will be cancelled in October because it falls directly on Halloween night.

Our art teacher for the month of October will be Mark Jackson. He is an acrylic artist who does fabulous western art and cows. We will do a tractor in front of an old farm building. If you haven’t gotten the supply list and/or references, contact Mark or Suzanne.

Murfreesboro First United Methodist Church is having Festival of Art and Crafts on Saturday, October 29, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. If anyone would like to go in together to share a booth, contact Suzanne.

Wilson bank’s home office in Lebanon is having an October fest on Oct. 15 and 16. They have a fine arts competition and a photography competition. For more info:

We will NOT have kids art camp at Fall Break

The wine and cheese event has been postponed until May, when the city of Murfreesboro will be focusing on the arts.

We have introduced the idea of having officers elected every 2 years and staggering the terms. This must be brought up for a vote by the general membership. It was discussed at the meeting and decided that we need to vote on the official written change in the bylaws to change this. It will be done at our October meeting. We will also have 2 openings for recording secretary and corresponding secretary. If you are interested, let a board member know. (We are splitting up the job descriptions to include an additional computer person, due to the increased computer presence.)

The new Linebaugh Artist of the Month is Laura Dillard. Congratulations Laura!

Debbie H. brought up the idea of a school mural project at Barfield Elementary. If you have contacts with an art teacher at an area school, please let us know, so we might do a project with them, also.

Center for the Arts show

We will have our reception for the Center for the Arts show (near the square in Murfreesboro TN) next Friday, September 9. We'll have goodies and punch from 5-7. Come on out and join us and then stay to see the opening of "Anything Goes," a Cole Porter musical. We'll see if I can make this link work, or just type it in YouTube. I'll bet you've heard of it and didn't know it!

Murfreesboro Art League Newsletter – August

The Adams Place judging/show was a lot of fun.

If you are planning to enter the contest for the logo for the Friends of Cannonsburgh, get working! It is due Thurs., Sept. 1. It should have some sort of graphic representing Cannonsburgh and have the words “Friends of Cannonsburgh.”

Center for the Arts show set-up is Thurs., Sept. 1 from 11-2. We will hang up until 4:30. Each person is asked to bring up to 5 pieces. People are asked to bring an artist’s statement and hammers. Claire will buy some of the hooks. Take-down is Sept. 29.

The Symphony is September 22. We will have Mark as the featured artist as well as 3 members for the regular gallery display. We need 3 volunteers! NOTE: Each artist only gets ONE ticket this year, and you have to RESERVE it 2 weeks prior! You need to set up between 5-6pm, smile and greet people before and at intermission, and take down around 8:30-9. That’s all there is to it! Please let us know by Sept. 5 (next Monday) if you can do it.

Bobbie Ventura will be working on a scrapbook. If you have images, please send them to her ASAP.

Special thanks go to several members for all the prep work that went into the Tennessee Crossroads filming. Debbie H. organized the whole thing! Claire, Suzanne, and Bobbie B cleaned the gallery, and Suzanne repainted the sign. Everything looked great and the class and interviews were well planned. Mary Miller Veasy (Missy) was our oil painting teacher. Debbie H., Clarice and Claire had interviews. The whole filming process was very exciting. The folks at Tennessee Crossroads will let us know when the show airs and will give us a dvd to copy. We are also now linked to their facebook page. Go check it out. Titus Bartos is a photographer in Murfreesboro who is trying to improve his portfolio. He is offering artists and musicians free photo sessions until Sept. 30. Go to Made in Murfreesboro to check it out.

Other upcoming art teachers are Mark Jackson, who will teach acrylics in October and Marilyn Brisbois, who will teach watercolors on YUPO paper in November.

Oil Colors: #30 Winton Oil Color (Phthalo Blue) #8 Winton Oil Color(Cadmium Yellow Pale Hue) #1 Winton Oil Color (Alizarin Crimson) #40 Winton Oil Color(Titanium White)

Or just get a cobolt blue, cad yellow light, alizarin crimson and a white

Brushes: #4, #6, #8 or #9 filberts or flats, the cheaper the better, make sure they are not real soft or flimsy.

Oderless turpentine & something to put it in, or mineral spirits (We have baby food jars.)

Canvas: 8x10 or 11x14 primed, not extra fine or smooth
Palette: any kind will do, mine is a 14" wooden

Paper Towels

Murfreesboro Art League Newsletter – July

If you haven’t been in the gallery lately, you need to come. It is looking fabulous! Thanks Claire for hanging the pieces, and thanks everyone for sharing your wonderful talents with us. Be sure to check if your older pieces have been placed in storage upstairs. If you have work on display, we ask that you work in the gallery a few hours/month.

Thank you also to everyone who helped with the Uncle Dave Macon Days. Not only was it a lot of fun, but we met many guests from around the world as well as several prospective new members.

We are in the process of starting to plan our wine and cheese event. Phyllis will check if the auto club will do it with us to help defray costs. We cannot do it with the Friends of Cannonsburgh group yet, because the city is still working on getting their non-profit status confirmed. It is tentatively set as mid October.

Speaking of the Friends of Cannonsburgh, they need a logo designed, so they are having a competition. It should have some sort of graphic representing Cannonsburgh and have the words “Friends of Cannonsburgh.” It is due on Sept. 1. Their next meeting is on Aug. 4.

We have an opportunity to have our works in a “judged” show. Adams Place Assisted Living will have an art show. We will judge their works and they will judge ours. Please bring 2 pieces to put in the show on Aug. 8 or 15. Works will hang for 2 weeks and be judged on Aug. 30 at 2 pm.

Other shows lined up for fall are the Symphony in September (1 evening, plus you get free symphony tickets), Center for the Arts, and MidSouth Bank. We are also looking into doing the studio tour in October!

The new Linebaugh artist of the Month is Jack Freeman. Congratulations Jack!

Thank you goes to Harry Polny for teaching photography during the month of July. We learned about different types of cameras, features, etc.

Phyllis and Suzanne are just finishing up their second kids’ art “camps.” The classes are going great, and we hope to have even more students next year.

If you are planning to check out the artwork at the restaurant “Blue,” please tell them at the door that you are from the art league. You can ask for Mr. Pogue. They will start their artist of the month program in Oct. It is a HUGE space for about 30 large paintings.

Jerry’s Artarama is still showing some of our members’ art. Talk to Amanda at Jerry’s if you want your art hung there. By the way, I got a groupon for Jerry’s today. You might want to look into it if you shop there often. It was $19 for $40 worth of supplies.

A part of the meeting was spent brainstorming. We’ve decided to look into some demonstrations by professional artists Other ideas were field trips for a plein aire day at the Sam Davis Home, a night photography trip, and possibly getting a laptop/projector or tv combo for school demonstrations, watching how-to videos, etc. Does anyone know how to write grants?? Also, if you have any other ideas of the direction you want the art league to go, please e-mail them to me!! suzanne.lebeau@att.net

After the meeting, we ate, shared art, and catalogued our art that is on display in the gallery. PLEASE make sure you work all has tags on it. We almost sold a large piece on Sunday, but it had no tags or info! The first 2 weeks in August we will do free painting, and Suzanne will teach a watercolor scene on the 3^rd Monday (Aug 15).

Murfreesboro Art League Newsletter – June

I feel like a big “whew!” since this is the first time we don’t seem to be rushing to place things in a show or take one down. It is kind of a relief. The shows will pick back up in the fall with The Center for the Arts, Symphony, and MidSouth Bank events. However, we are still taking animal and/ or water pictures for our own gallery. We decided earlier this year to switch out mid-year to help draw repeat visitors and maybe improve publicity.

You can bring your new artwork in to the gallery on Saturday, or on the 11^th and 18^th during the photography classes. Just lean them against the walls. While we are out taking pictures, Claire will arrange and hang the new ones and leave the old ones leaning for you to take home

Each person can display up to 4 paintings or sculptural items. That way everyone gets fair representation. Remember that in order to show your work, you should also volunteer one day a month in the gallery. *If you are unable to work the gallery, contact a board member so other arrangements can be made.

I know I put this part in last month, but the offer still stands. If you want to put together an “artist’s statement,” Jeff Mayfield has taught a class on this before and has offered to share his expertise. This would be a great way to help promote your art. If someone comes into the gallery and likes your work, they can get an info sheet on you! Jeff can let you know what to include. jeff@jeffmayfieldartist.com We now have a folder of about 6 artists’ statements to show guests that visit the gallery. Yay!!

Greg Pogue of the new restaurant “BLUE” was a guest speaker at the meeting on June 27^th. They will have Sunday Brunch, with jazz music and a baby grand piano. He shared the menu items and his vision of having an “artist of the month” starting in September. The restaurant is located in the Jackson heights shopping center near the movie theater. The address is 810 NW Broad and the phone number is 410-3383 if you want more information.

After the meeting, we shared food, fun and critiques of some of our art.

If anyone is interested in helping with the future of Cannonsburgh, come to a “Friends of Cannonsburgh” meeting on July 5 at 6:30 pm in our gallery. They also are having a contest to design a label for the friends group. Contact Phyllis (see below) for more information.

Uncle Dave Macon Days will be on July 8, 9, & 10. We will need to work the gallery, so free tickets are available. Contact Claire at 459-0943 if you need tickets. There will be music, demonstrations, clogging, people in period dress, etc.

Phyllis and Suzanne will be teaching children’s general art classes at the Sam Davis Home July 11-15, 8:30-12 (grades 5&6) and July 18-22, 8:30-12 (grades 7&8) and watercolor classes at Cannonsburgh July 25-29 (9-11 – grades 5&6, 1-3 – grades 7&8. The Linebaugh artist of the month for July is Claire Smith, with abstracts.

There will be no meeting on July 4, due to area fireworks shows. Harry Polny will host a photography course on July 11 and 18. He asks everyone to bring a camera (preferably a CHARGED digital), tripod and external flash if you have them. You might also want to bring a pencil/paper to take notes if you’re like me.

If you have items at the MidSouth Bank show, we have to remove those on Friday. We have changed the time to 3 to 4:30, so we can keep the gallery open until then. If you cannot come between those times, please call Suzanne at 631-6346, so other arrangements can be made. Thank you so much for sharing your talents with others. We want to make Murfreesboro more of an “art” town.

A special thank you goes out to Clarice Nelson. Even though we worked on our iris paintings for a month, Clarice was the only one to take hers to the Iris Show on May 18^th.

I know we put this part in last month, but it is SO important, and people have been lax about signing up. The gallery will be open on Fri from 10-3, Sat from 10-4 (2 separate shifts) and Sun from 1-4. We have nearly 70 members now, 42 are active adults. If EVERYONE would pull just 5 3-hour shifts between now and the end of Oct, it would make it much easier on the few who usually end up doing most of the shifts. If you are going to go paint on our “Fun Fridays,” please call Claire (615) 459-0943 so she can set up a schedule. This Sunday, we will discuss what direction we want the watercolor class to go, and talk about different techniques for making flowing water. We meet from 1-4 on Sun.

Sheila sent us a thank you note for helping out with Pioneer Days. It was a lot of fun. There were people dressed in period costumes, along with lots of food/product booths. Although the weather was cold, we had well over 100 visitors and sold some art!

We don’t have any shows for the summer. The Center for the Arts, Symphony, and MidSouth Bank will have shows in the fall.

We were lucky to have 3 guests at the biz mtg. Marilyn Brisbois, Paula Francis, and Carolyn Dodson spoke about TAL, the Nashville Art Crawl, Paula’s new gallery, the Rockvale Art Gallery (7.8 mi past Cason Ln on New Salem Rd), and the Tn Watercolor Society. Marilyn then showed a video on the art selection process and what they look for in a painting for their exhibition. We saw lots of fabulous art!

Upcoming classes: June is photography with Harry Polny, and July will be perspective with Clarice Nelson.

The gallery will be closed for Memorial Day and for the Blacksmith weekend on June 4 & 5.

Murfreesboro Art League Newsletter – April

NEXT MONDAY, May 2 (like in a few days folks!!) will be the start of the MidSouth Bank exhibit. We will have to take our own racks. Bobbie Ventura has offered to take the racks, but will need help setting up from 2-3. This is the bank by the Center for the Arts. We need to go in the back door.

The Rotunda Show looks FABULOUS! Thanks to all who helped hang the art, participated, and came to the reception. Special thanks go to Rev. Ernest Newsom for the lovely music at the reception. Remember that we have to remove our own art or send someone to do it for us on Fri, May 13 from 3-5.

The Iris show at SunTrust Bank will be from May 6to 8. (about a WEEK away!!) Please take an easel for each piece of artwork. The actual event is the 8^th. We take down the evening of the 8^th. (*time pending)

OIL PAINTING CLASS LIST: Brushes- a couple round size 2 to 8. Filberts are what we will use the most, so a few sizes of this, a 4 or 6 is a good choice, A bright brush is helpful but not necessary. A rigger is necessary for signing your painting. Odorless turpenoid(Artist grade is best.) with small jar

Limited palette of oil colors: titanium white, Cad medium yellow, yellow ochre, cad red, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, sap green. If your colors are close to these but a different name, no problem. Don’t put your colors on your palette until class if you want to be shown where it is best to place them.

Carol Berning - April featured artist at Linebaugh Library

As a toddler, I sat on the floor underneath quilts in large frames as my mother, grandmothers, and their friends created delicate, feathery patterns with their stitches. Gazing up at the “stained glass” fabric, I watched them push their tiny quilting needles through the layers of muslin, cottony batting, and colorful squares.
That is my earliest memory of beautiful art.
Following their lead, I grew up sewing and quilting. Recently I began to explore drawing and painting, first with watercolor. When my husband gave me art lessons for a Christmas present, I began to study under the guidance of Susan Truex, using oils.
I enjoy painting images of people and things that are important to me, whether it’s a still life of feathers and eggs, portraits of my brothers, or landscapes of the family farm.
My first serious portrait was of my recently-deceased older brother, painted at the request of my sister-in-law. Then I painted a portrait of my younger brother.
Then my friend, Judge Steve Daniel, asked me to paint his official portrait to hang in the judicial building in the courtroom in which he had presided prior to his retirement. I was thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to complete his portrait.
I’m also thrilled to have one of my paintings hanging in the library at Blackman Middle School. It’s a figural oil of a young teen-age boy sitting on the library floor, reading a book. I’m presently working on its mate, a painting of a young teen-age girl engrossed in a book.
Many of my still lifes, florals, and landscapes become note cards, which are available as gift sets.

Murfreesboro Art League Newsletter

We had some problems last month with the format of the newsletter, so I’m just going to keep it basic this month.

The Rotunda Show has been set up. We will need volunteers to bring finger foods to the reception which has been changed to a new date. It had to be moved back to April 12 (4:30-6), because we could not get the fliers mailed out in time with the previous date of tomorrow! Also, if you have pictures in the Rotunda, please send me a digital copy, so we can post them on the Murfreesboro city web site. suzanne.lebeau@att.net

Claire has asked us to bring our Spring themed art works to the gallery this Fri. between 10 and 2 or next Mon. evening. If you don’t have something Springy, just bring something anyway!! She also needs some help with school tours on April 15, 28 and May 5. Please call her if you can help. (615) 459-0943

On April 14 we will be having another show at the Symphony. Set up will be at 6 and the show starts at 7. It is at Murfreesboro UMC. You get free symphony tickets if you show your work here!

We will need people to work the gallery on Sat and Sun every weekend through the summer EXCEPT the first weekend in June. The blacksmiths are having an event and it will cost $70 to enter that weekend. We do NOT have to do the art activity with their wives and children as was previously requested. Our first date will be April 16 when the gallery opens. It is a big deal with vendors, actors, booths, etc. We ask that each member work at least 1 day a month to help keep us open. We don’t have a big enough budget to hire a curator, so we ALL have to put in some “sweat equity” if we are to stay alive as a gallery!

BIG CHANGE!!! Due to a conflict in schedules, we will be doing the live models and still life drawings during April. Oil painting has been moved to May. Details on supplies for May will be sent at the end of April.

We’ve decided to change out the gallery several times this year to keep things fresh. We will have some of the general paintings as usual, but our major focus will change. June will be “Water,” August will be “Animals,” and October will be “Fall/Winter.”

Tommy Ellis is starting a new 8 week watercolor session with “Roaring Water” this Thursday. For info, call: 869-8195.

The library is now open with new rules. In order to take a book home, you must have a board member or old member sign you out and pay a $5.00 deposit. You can keep the book 2 weeks and then renew it once. The $5.00 will be returned when you sign the book back in.

On May 2 we will start the show at MidSouth Bank. We need to bring our paintings between 2 and 2:30 so we will have time to hang them before closing. It is downtown by the Center for the Arts. Please enter by the back door. We will also need some volunteers with a truck that can bring our wire stands from the gallery to the bank. (Suz will e-mail list to request this.) This show will run through May 27^th, when we will have to take down the displays.

Wow, the Rotunda exhibit is fast approaching. We will be hanging our art on Monday, March 28th. We would like you to have your art there between 1 and 3, and we will hang items between 3 and 5. We REALLY need some folks to help volunteer to help hang. The Rotunda is part of City Hall and is across the plaza from the Linebaugh Library. You can park in the underground garage and go up the elevator. If there is some reason that you canNOT be there between 1 and 3, the only other option is to bring it to the gallery this Monday evening(Mar 21). This option is for emergencies only, since Claire will possibly be the one taking things over to the Rotunda by herself! Please call her at 459-0943 or talk to her at the meeting on Monday to make arrangements.

Remember, if your dues were not paid by March 7th, you may not participate in the Rotunda exhibit.

Claire Smith - Linebaugh Library artist of the month

Claire Justine Smith, an abstract painter for over 40 years will be the Linebaugh Library artist of the month. Her focus will be Sumi-E paintings. Below is her artist's statement:

I've never felt at home on earth. I've been a stranger here all my life. I grew up on the family ranch in the Glass Mountain Range in the Big Bend area of far west Texas, north of Marathon. I learned to count by counting the stars of the Milky Way as they came out at night, until there were too many stars to count. I wondered which light in the sky I really belonged on. Somewhere out there was my real home.
    I lived in Houston, Texas, from 1965 to 1971, during the height of the space program. My children and I watched through the telescope the points of light moving across the night sky, as the space vehicles circled the earth or headed to the moon. I wanted to go, too!
    "Space" images began to come to me about 1970, which were first drawn on paper in black ink. Then I was accepted at the Joan Miro Drawing Competition in Barcelona, Spain, which I entered between 1974 and 1983. Later, I began drawing "in spaces" images on glass in three dimensions. At first, they were done in black ink, and later in colored ink. Where did these images come from? I decided to find out.
    So, one night, I left the earth and moved out into space. I moved among the planets, stars, suns, moons, and galaxies galore. It is beautiful out in the universe, and noisy, too. Finally, I came to the end of the universe, and there was a wall! I thought that was strange-so, being the curious Gemini that I am, I decided to climb over and see what was on the other side.   What I saw were all the images I have been drawing floating before me. My images were real after all!
Biography: Graduated with a BA from Fontbonne College in Saint Louis, Missouri. Studied at the San Antonio Art Institute,13-10 Studio, The Art League of Houston, and independent studies. Exhibited work in the US with the majority being in the Southwest, Portugal, Spain, Italy, and France. Paintings are in collections in the US and Europe.
