January/February Newsletter

Murfreesboro Art League Newsletter – Jan/Feb 2015
What? How can it be a new year again?
Don’t forget that it is time to pay your dues again! If you are currently a member, we respectfully ask that you pay your dues by March. If you cannot come to a meeting or class during that time, please contact our Treasurer, Phyllis Razo so you can work out a plan.

January and February Artists of the Month: Suzanne LeBeau was the artist of the month at the Linebaugh Library for the month of January. You still have time to check it out until Monday afternoon, Feb. 2. The February artist of the month will be new member, Beverly Hall. Go see the exhibit to see what she’s been up to.
NOTE: We will not have the artist of the month at the Murfreesboro Art League gallery during the months of Jan-April because Cannonsburgh is closed to the general public during these months.

Art Classes:
We have several outside art teachers currently hosting classes in the gallery/classroom. Pam Hale is teaching on Thursday evenings, Mary Miller Veazie has classes on Friday morning, and Gayle Levee will be teaching oil, acrylic or water-mixable oil starting THIS Saturday. Pam and Mary’s classes are full and already in full swing! However, Gayle MIGHT  have some spaces, since her class has not started yet. Contact Gayle at 615-833-8480 or to schedule participation or for questions. For samples of some of her work, see

February Monday night classes

Our regular series of art classes starts back up on Feb. 2, 9, and 16. This month, we will be focusing on oil painting techniques. Our own founder, Clarice Nelson will start with a palette knife painting workshop. The other two Mondays will be taught by Danny Jones, past member who has recently returned to us. (YAY!) Supplies shown below!

Call for art
A juried art show/competition will be held in Smyrna. $15 entry per piece – cash prizes! Entries will be accepted between Feb 1 and 6. For more info:
Service Requests:
Since part of our mission statement is to spread art in the community, we are asking for help at Mitchell Nielson School on Thurs. Feb. 12 where we will share our art and talents with students and parents. We NEED workers, art to show, and art to auction. Contact Ted or Phyllis if you can help. We are also asking for art to auction for Habitat for Humanity and Liz’s Church camp. Please bring pieces for auction to the gallery on Feb 2 or 9.

Supplies for Feb oil painting classes:
·      Oil paints (You can use water-mixable oils or acrylics if you don’t have oil paints, but the effects might not be quite the same.)
·      Oil brushes in various sizes (bristle)
·      ROLL of Paper towels
·      ODORLESS mineral spirits or Turpenoid if possible- the room gets quite smelly if everyone uses turpentine!
·      Jar or can with LID for the cleaning solution of your choice (See above.) WE CANNOT pour it in the sink, toilet or on the ground, so take it WITH you!
·      Did I say Paper towels? lol
·      Small canvas covered boards or stretched canvas. Please don’t bring larger than 9x12 because they take so much room.
·      Palette knives if you have them. We have a FEW extras if you don’t own one. It’s a fun technique to try!
·      Palette (or large piece of cardboard or thin board to put some palette paper on)

Murfreesboro Art League - more January information

I know some of you will get this twice, but we have many followers here on the blog that are not on the regular email list, so please bear with me. This info is important.
On the classes below, I think class size is limited to the first 12 participants, so order early!

We have 3 great art learning opportunities coming to the art league! The best way to IMPROVE with your art skills is to practice, practice, practice.
We have 3 teachers coming from the "outside" to teach classes on nights OTHER than Monday nights. We will still have regular Monday meetings and classes included for free in your membership, though!

I believe these classes are an on-going thing where one thing builds on the previous, so you cannot just take ONE class.

On Thursday evenings from 6-9 pm, Pam Hale will have acrylic/drawing classes for $260. Start date is Jan 15, and end date is March 19. Cost is $260 for all 10 classes (due up front, please) Contact Pam at 615-585-2486 or Pam received a BFA degree in Art and a BA degree in Art Education from Birmingham Southern University in Alabama. Newsletter - January (sort of - lol)

Since we did not have a business meeting over the holidays, we are not having an official newsletter this month. The only real news is that for the month of January, we will still meet on Monday nights from 7-9, but we will not be having a particular topic or teacher. We are just having "open studio" time. Come work on your own current project and socialize with other artists.

Also, don't forget that annual dues are due any time between now and March. Regular individual membership = $45, Seniors 65+ = $35, Students = $25, and Families = $50. Fees cover all classes and open studio time for the year, unless we have a special materials fee or special outside teacher. This also enables you to show your work in our gallery, the Rotunda, the Linebaugh library and other possible venues or arts/craft fairs we choose to participate in.

Y'all have a HAPPY and productive New Year!
