September Newsletter

Murfreesboro Art League Newsletter – Sept. 2016

BIGGIE NEWS of the year!!!! We will be MOVING!Yes, you heard that right! Due to the issue of having Cannonsburgh locked up at night now, we will no longer be able to park near our present building after the first of the year. We have been given the option of moving to the McKnight house, which is still IN Cannonsburgh. It’s the first log cabin after you enter the new main gate – across from the blacksmith shop, next to the general store. A Scout is working on fixing it up for his Eagle Scout Award during the fall months. After deliberation of the pros and cons, we voted unanimously on this move. We would be able to park nearby, and the entrance would be OUTSIDE the gates, making it much easier for us to come and go. If we had specialty teachers, they could move their items in and out much easier, too. Day classes can resume, since students won’t have to haul their supplies by hand to the back of the village. We are very excited about this prospect as it moves forward. A task force has been established to work with the Scout and contractor as the improvements are being made.
September classes: No class on Sept 5. Heloise Shilstat will be teaching class on Sept 12 and 19 with torn paper. She has two options: bring a watercolor you aren't happy with, and plan to enhance it or "doctor it up" with torn paper. materials fee $1   or
Make a copy of a favorite impressionist picture. Attached is my version and the original by Hassan Childe. We can use books from the MAL library. Materials fee $5 (materials are mixed media paper, glue, parchment paper, acrylic spray) Straight edges, brushes for glue, magazines will be available.

Here is Heloise’s torn paper mosaic based on a painting by Childe Hassam’s impressionistic painting.

A big Thank YOU ! goes out to all who helped run the gallery last month, helped out at the art crawl, Read to Succeed Day, and Wild Arts Day. These events keep us in the public eye and help with our mission statement of “promoting the arts for all ages in Murfreesboro and Rutherford County.”
September Artists of the Month: Peggy will be the Linebaugh Library artist of the month, and Norma will remain ours here at the gallery.
Special Class: Ginger Oglesbie is having a class on Sept 17, Sat from 10-1. Class is called “Movement in Abstract” and will be a hands-on workshop. If you want more information on this class, email me at

Greenway Arts Festival is also on Sept 17. So far, we have SEVERAL artists that have said they will participate: Mark, Norma, Reba, and Gloria / Other potential artists are Bobbie, Phyllis, Rebekah, Janice. Please let us know if anyone else would also like to participate. (See email above.) With this many, we can probably do shifts, so we don’t have to be there all day! We have 2 tents, which Danny is sponsoring.

·         Sept 12 & 19  – Heloise Shilstat, torn paper

Important News: Parking: We will still be parking in the village until the end of the year, but will follow safety issues for fire trucks. Do not park on any sidewalk. Don’t park on the inner circle, so truck can get through. Don’t park past end of garden, so fire truck can get to the hydrant. THANKS!
