June newsletter

We are putting the June newsletter out a little early because we will NOT have a business meeting or board meeting on Memorial Day, May 27. See you at the open studio on June 3 instead.

Murfreesboro Art League Newsletter June 2019

Upcoming classes for June : Open studio and Plein air with Megan Lightell and Suzanne LeBeau

June 3 will be an open studio session. June 10 will be a plein air demonstration with Megan Lightell. She is a professional painter who has a soft, dreamy look to her landscapes. Check it out. https://www.meganlightell.com/recent-work/open-spaces/2018/8/20/clouds-rising-30x30-inches Come on out to ask questions/take notes. On June 17, you’ll put these new ideas to canvas as we head outdoors with Suzanne LeBeau. Even if you don’t have a plein air easel, we’ll talk about ways to improvise!

Don’t forget Mark Jackson’s acrylic classes will be in July!

Artists of the month

Phyllis Razo will be the June artist of the month at Linebaugh Library.

Bylaws and procedures – We updated the job descriptions this month, and we will be reviewing and updating our bylaws and procedures this spring! We’re still working on this due to many illnesses this spring.

Center for the Arts show:

The show was a great time. We got great exposure in the community, showed some art, and had fun at the reception with over 50 in attendance! Wendy sold a piece (sorry for the wrong name earlier!) Congratulations!

THANK YOU – to Justyna Kostkowska for a fun time with pastel painting in May. We learned several new techniques.

HELP!

Our June Volunteer calendar looks kind of EMPTY. Only 1/3 of the spots are filled. Please use the link already sent to you to sign up directly or email me (see end of newsletter) because I'll be out of town much of the month and can’t set these up! We still need people for: June 1(2), June 8(2), June 13 – field trip(2), June 15(3), June 16(2), June 22(4), June 23(1), June 29(3), and June 30(2)

Plein air paint-out:

We will have a meeting to get the ball rolling on this on June 3 at 7 pm, during the open studio time. Scheduled date for the event is Oct. 12, so we really need to get this started.

MAL LOGO contest:

We are looking to update our logo for branding purposes. It will go on stationary, the website, Facebook, etc. Who knows, it might even end up on aprons or t-shirts. We would like YOUR ideas! Please submit design ideas to murfreesboroartleague@gmail.com.

Deadline: June 21

REMEMBER: Gates for classes are open from 6:30-7 only. Please arrive early.

Pastels with Justyna Kostkowska

Come join guest teacher Justyna Kostkowska as we learn about pastels. Please be sure to sign up on our "sign-up genius" to reserve your spot. (15 spaces available) Class is free for art league members, but $15 for the public. Supplies are not provided. Here is the link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0548A9AE22A4FC1-pastel

Supply list:

1. Pastel paper (2 pieces, Canson Pastel paper is good quality, any sanded paper is great)

2.  Hard sturdy support backing the size of your paper or larger and a piece of Reynolds aluminum foil to make a gutter underneath to catch pastel dust. We work vertical in pastel so the excess falls down.

3.  Plastic Tape or bulldog clips to attach paper to the backing.

4.  SOFT artist pastels: around 30 piece set would be ideal, or at least a light and a dark in every color. Most sets contain medium value colors, so if you can, please purchase a few extreme darks and lights in addition if you are serious :)  We will not use true black, which looks flat, so you need colors that are close to it and can do its work.  I understand the cost factor, but a few quality pastels will make your experience and painting much higher quality, so I recommend SENNELIER brand HALF STICK  which has nice 20 or 40 pcs sets at a decent price.  You get twice the colors in half sticks and they are sturdy and do not crumble as much as full sticks. They are soft and buttery. If you already have hard pastels like Nupastels please bring those as they are useful for painting details such as grasses and fine tree branches.

5.  Wet baby wipes.
6. Old stiff brush for removing unwanted pastel.
